Stormgate Beginner’s Guide: Essential Tips and Tricks
Think real-time strategy games are just for serious gamers? Nope! Stormgate shows that everyone can lead an army and win battles. This guide gives you a relaxed way to control troops and build empires. We’ll explain the basics, give you some clever tricks, and ensure you enjoy every part.
Fast Construction of Buildings
To begin, learn the quick build menu (Q key). It offers the simplest way to build structures, create units, and improve your technology.
Automatic Worker Selection: The quick build menu chooses a nearby worker to begin construction. It gives priority to idle workers first then selects the next available worker if necessary. So, if you need a barracks or a habitat just use the quick build menu, and you’re all set.
Faction-Specific Quirks: Each faction has its own building quirks. For instance, the Vanguard can use multiple workers to speed up construction (though with diminishing returns), while the Infernals have imps that transform into the buildings themselves. The Celestials rely on Cascade fields for their structures.
Quick Build Units
Building units is just as crucial. This feature lets you make any unit your faction can create.
Hotkey Shortcuts: For the Vanguard, pressing ‘W’ gives you basic units and workers. You can send them to any resource on the map by right-clicking.
Late Game Help: When you have lots of resources and production facilities late in the game, the quick build menu is a big help. It allows you to keep an eye on all your barracks and production units without picking each one by hand.
To make workers, the quick build menu works much better than using control groups.
Upgrades & Advanced Info
Upgrades play a key role, and the quick build menu helps with this too. You can construct any upgrades if you have the needed buildings.
Unique Upgrades: Stormgate differs from other games. It doesn’t have simple upgrades like +1 attack or +1 defense. Instead, upgrades often add new abilities or functions to your units.
Tech Tree Navigation: Some high-level upgrades need prior upgrades. Be sure to look at the tech tree or in-depth unit guides to know what you need.
Example: The Lancer’s kinetic redirection upgrade allows them to attack and move faster when under fire making them strong against quick-attacking units.
Hotkeys & Customization
Hotkeys have an impact on your gameplay. Stormgate’s hotkeys follow a grid system making them easy to grasp.
Common Hotkeys: ‘A’ to attack move, ‘G’ to patrol, ‘D’ to hold position, and ‘Spacebar’ to select all army units.
Customization: You can adjust hotkeys to match how you play. For instance, switching the menu key from ‘Escape’ to ‘F10’ helps to avoid quitting the game by mistake.
Adjust camera locations and idle worker keys (such as changing to ‘F1’ for idle workers) to align with what you’re used to from other RTS games.
Creep Camps & Control Points
Creep camps dot the maps and offer different advantages when taken over.
Grabbing Camps: Defeat the monsters and take the control point to get perks like sight, supplies, recovery, or quicker movement.
Regenerating Camps: Camps come back after a while, with stronger monsters and bigger payoffs.
Pro Tip: Take as many camps as you can without pushing too far. In the final stages, supply camps become important.
Luminite (Basic Supply)
Luminite serves as the main supply in Stormgate essential for pretty much everything.
Mining Luminite: Mines have four mining spots. Each can handle up to 12 workers well. Beyond that extra workers will just stand around.
Optimal Mining: Spread your workers across several mines to get the best results.
Don’t pack a single mine with more than 12 workers. Instead, open up new spots.
Therium (Advanced Resource)
Therium is the high-level resource much like vespene gas in Starcraft 2.
Mining Therium: Workers extract therium and transport it to base. The game doesn’t set a strict limit on worker numbers, but therium grows over time.
Enriched Therium: Therium gets richer as time passes allowing for quicker mining when left untouched for a bit. To keep a steady flow, avoid depleting it.
To mine, keep 4-5 workers on a therium patch.
Terrain, High Ground & Trees
Stormgate’s terrain offers tactical benefits.
Trees: Workers or specific units can chop down trees to open up paths for attacks.
High Ground: High ground stops enemies from seeing but doesn’t give extra damage. You can put buildings right on ramps to make smart walls.
Make the most of the land by blocking what your enemy can see and making narrow spots they have to go through.
