Papers Please – General Tips & Tricks

TIP 1

A significant part of Papers, Please is about managing your expenses and keeping your family alive. As mentioned earlier, you gain 5 credits per entrant that you process correctly. Rent costs 25 credits, food costs 5 credits per family member, and heat costs 10 credits in the Class 8 apartment.

Keeping this in mind, if you’re just starting out, have all of your family members, and are in the starting apartment, the rent, food, and heat will cost you 55 credits in total. Therefore, you should always try to process at least 11 entrants, as doing so will give you exactly 55 credits.

TIP 2

Papers, Please is all about how much time you have left in the day. The time is constantly counting down, and it can be very stressful. However, time does not count down until you call your first entrant. Therefore, you can spend as much time as needed at the start of the day preparing. Make sure to have your rulebook, most wanted bulletin, and key(s) organized and ready on your desk before you start the day in case you need them.

TIP 3

If you process an entrant incorrectly, you will receive a citation. Citations are bad because you do not get the 5 credits that you would normally receive for correctly processing an entrant, and you may also receive a penalty. However, you do not get a penalty for the first 2 citations. With this in mind, if you’re short on time, you can sometimes risk getting a citation, knowing that you won’t be penalized for the first two.

TIP 4

Sometimes, you’re not processing enough people, and you’re not making enough money. To save a little money, you can alternate between not giving your family food for a day and not giving them heat for a day. You gotta do what you gotta do.

TIP 5

This might seem cruel, but if you’re really running low on money, you can kill off members of your family so that you don’t have to pay as much rent, food, or heat.
