Dealing with high-pressure opponents is not easy. It takes patience and experience to ward off opposing players without incurring a foul or yellow card in every encounter. Real Madrid, Barcelona and PSG are some of the most ball-hungry teams in the game, and this guide will teach you how to effectively deal with them.
HOW TO BEAT HIGH-PRESSURE OPPONENTS in FIFA 23
Aggressive teams usually have solid ball-handling strategies. However, the most interesting thing happens when they don’t possess the ball. They become super active and begin pressing the opposing team with full force. Use the following strategies to counter them:
- Switch Sides – Switch sides with the ball as often as possible. It’s possibly the easiest way to slow them down and counter their hyper aggressiveness. Target the wings on the opponent’s side. If the defenders are aggressive, use aerial passes and loft through balls to get past them. Try to be active at all times and keep the opponent guessing.
- Slow Things Down – The best counter to aggressive teams is slowing things down. Try to control the flow of the match and take away their tempo. Fast and quick passing is a great way to slow things down. Always keep two players close to each other. Even if you lose possession, resort to jockeying to get it back. There is a famous strategy called ‘Hug Sideline’. It gives you an ample amount of space to play around in the wings without risking possession of the ball.
- Bait the Opponents – If you can’t shake off the defenders, become the bait. It can be difficult to escape pressure when you’re approaching the box. Instead, aggro as many players as you can then use a quick back heel pass, or a one-two pass to shoot the ball to someone who is open. It may not seem like much, but that little bit of time might be all they need to score the finishing goal. You can even mix things up and take your chances with a long shot instead.
- Loosen up your Defense – Loosen up your defense. Instead of clinging together, let them run around a little. A casual play from the back combined with a quickly building defense can easily crumble any aggressive team.
- Use your Goalkeeper – When the pressure ramps up, pass the ball back to the goalkeeper. This opens up your wingers and full-backers. Use a simple driven lofted pass, and if you get the ball then you can play out from the back. It’s much more efficient than hoofing the ball and running up to the midfield.
