I cannot bolt anything. I only get the x reticle, do I have to fly out of the station?

You don’t need a station just bolt ammo. Some things like workbenches can only be bolted in specific locations indicated by an orange circle. and also need something on the other side to be bolted to a Beam or basic plate for instance. In fact if you hold LMB you can quick bolt stuff.
