Runes are a vital part of the gameplay in Undecember, offering players a wide range of options to enhance their combat abilities and tailor their character’s skills and playstyle to suit their preferences and needs. There are several different types of runes available in the game, each with their own unique characteristics and effects.

Skill Runes

Skill Runes are hexagonal runes that allow players to use various types of skills, such as melee, ranged, and spell attacks. These runes have Link Slots in up to six different directions, which can be equipped with Link Runes to add additional effects to the skill. Link Runes are support runes that provide various effects when connected to a Skill Rune, but they must match the color and tag of the Skill Rune in order to be effective.

Runestones

Runestones are another type of rune that do not have any effects by themselves, but can be used to enchant the Skill Runes equipped in one of the 30 slots in the Rune Cast. Each Runestone has a unique enchantment effect, and up to three can be equipped at a time. However, Runestones that enchant the same slot cannot be equipped together. Runestones can be obtained from Raids, but cannot be enchanted individually and can be changed into new Runestones through Alchemy Synthesis.

Runecast

The Rune Cast is the board where players can equip Skill Runes, Link Runes, and Runestones. To access the Rune Cast, you can press the Skill Icon in the Menu or use the hotkey “K.” In the Rune Cast window, you can select and place the runes you wish to equip from the list on the right into the Rune Cast slots. You can also view the details of each skill by accessing the Skill Rune Tooltips, and can share the selected skill in chat or watch a video of the skill in use by pressing the appropriate buttons.

Basic Runes can be obtained from various sources, including quests, NPC shops, monster drops, and Alchemy Synthesis. Some runes can only be obtained from certain sources, such as monster drops or Guilds. The minimum grade for certain runes may be higher than Normal, and the availability of runes in NPC shops will vary based on the Act. Players can purchase Skill and Link Runes from the Mystic Pauline NPC in town using gold as currency.

In addition to the various types of runes, there is also a concept of Rune Grade, which is divided into Normal, Magic, Rare, and Legendary grades. The options and power of runes increase at higher grades. Basic Attack is a special type of Skill Rune that is not shown in the player’s Bag or the Rune Cast, but is automatically equipped in the center Skill Slot if no other Skill Runes are registered there.

Rune growth and enchanting

If you are interested in maximizing the potential of your runes in the game of Undecember, it is essential to understand the mechanics of rune growth and enchanting.

To begin with, let us discuss the process of growing runes. This can be accomplished by visiting the NPC known as Mystic Pauline in town, and utilizing both gold and elements. These elements come in five distinct colors: Red, Green, Blue, Earth, and Light. If the selected rune and the material elements possess matching colors, you will be granted additional experience points (EXP). It is worth noting that Earth and Light elements provide additional EXP for runes of all colors, and gold is not necessary when using Light elements for leveling up. Elements can be obtained through various means, including hunting, disassembling grown runes, and as rewards from other in-game content.

In addition to this, grown runes can be used as materials to transfer EXP to another rune. If the runes in question are the same color, 100% of the EXP is transferred. However, if the runes are different colors, only 80% of the EXP will be transferred. It is worth noting that the grade and Link Slots of the rune are not transferred, and must be transferred through Alchemy if desired. It is important to ensure that your stats are high enough to accommodate the increased level of the rune, as it will not be able to be leveled up otherwise.

Moving on to the topic of enchanting runes, this is achieved through the use of appropriate essences. These essences can be obtained through various means, such as drops, disassembling, trade, and ore. Each essence possesses a unique effect, such as the Rune Birth Essence, which has a chance to re-imbue the number of linked slots; the Rune Link Essence, which has a chance to change a linked slot’s location; and the Rune Color Essence, which has a chance to change a linked slot’s color. The Repeat Settings can be utilized to automatically enchant runes until the desired slot count, color, and link locations are achieved, and the real-time change in DPS can be viewed when enchanting equipped runes.

There are also essences available for upgrading the grade of your runes, including the Skill Rune Magic Upgrade Essence, which transforms a Normal grade Skill Rune into a Magic grade; the Skill Rune Rare Upgrade Essence, which transforms a Magic grade Skill Rune into a Rare grade; and the Skill Rune Legendary Upgrade Essence, which transforms a Rare grade Skill Rune into a Legendary grade. Similar essences can be found for Link Runes and Runestones.

It is important to note that the success rate of both rune growth and enchanting can vary, and some essences may have restrictions or may only be obtainable through certain sources. Therefore, it is essential to carefully consider the costs and benefits before deciding whether and how to utilize these features.
