The transmitters have a “channel” and a “message”. You can see the ships detecting these and displaying them in the trailer. The detectors can adjust their target range, the band (cone), channel, and spin. And output what they find (distance to and message value). Transmissions have distance falloff and I think the transmitter can set a target range.
