During the Deployment Phase, you can use. The given. Engineering Points (1) to build Parapets (trenches) or Breastworks (barricades) using the Build (2) menu. Build a barricade

Barricades are erected from material found on the battlefield. This can include anything from rocks to fallen trees to fence rails. A barricade can be built during battle. It protects against enemy fire and some concealment, but not nearly as much as a proper trench would.

Build a trench

This option is only available during the deployment phase (pre-battle, or•between days). Trenches provide the perfect cover for your men and also good concealment. There are four levels of trenches:

  • Level 1: Simple trench line, hastily dug.

  • Level 2: Trench with support for weapons, firing slits, and cover from observation and weather. Offers better protection and concealment than Level 1.

  • Level 3: As with Level 2, but with abattis added in front, at effective weapon range, to slow down an attacking enemy and break their cohesion.

  • Level 4: As Level 3, but with the addition of chevaux de fris4, which are spiked obstacles initially used to counter enemy cavalry charges. This level offers the best possible cover and concealment the troops wish for and is nearly impossible to break with a frontal assault.

To build a line of entrenchments, select the type (2) and then, with RMB, determine the line’s left edge (3). Using LMB, you can determine angles (4) to the entrenchment line. If the ghosted line is shown red, it means it cannot be built. When you have selected the last point or right edge of the line (5), you can finalize the entrenchment using LMB when the appropriate cursor (6) is shown and the line is built. The planned line will show a Cancel cursor (7), and LMB will then remove the planned line.

Parapets (trenches) can be upgraded with the Engineering points by pointing at a built line, using LMB when the Upgrade cursor (8) is shown.

If there are suitable pontoon bridge sites inside your Deployment Zone, they are shown ghosted on your map. RMB on the pontoon site when Build Pontoon cursor (9) is shown. Note that you can build pontoons also during the battle, but this requires a unit with Engineer Perk, and it will take some time.
