You can inherit baronies within your own counties, but not from counties owned by others. In cases where you might try to inherit a barony from another county, the barony will go to the person who owns that county.
Remember baronies are always viewed as part of a county. That said, it’s possible to lease baronies to other leaders, like Holy Orders. This lets them manage and profit from the barony, but it doesn’t actually leave your domain.
