Smalland: Survive the Wilds – Ultimate Taming Guide

43 9

While many residents of Smalland can be quite unfriendly, there are a few amiable insects that you can tame. Taming these insects is no walk in the park, but with this guide, you’ll become pals with Smalland’s native insects in a jiffy. Let’s get started!

Ladybug

Required Item – Ladybug Travel Kit (5x Fiber, 3x Edible Mushroom, 2x Nectar)

Uses – The Ladybug is a helpful sidekick, helping you store different resources while you gather supplies. This functions similarly to Chester in Don’t Starve Together, but you’ll need to equip the Ladybug with a backpack to carry items.

How – To tame the Ladybug, first craft a backpack and then engage the insect in a skirmish. Halt the battle when the insect’s HP is halved, and the taming option will appear. Upon accepting, the Ladybug will immediately put on her backpack and start following you wherever you go.

Wolf Spiders

Required Item – Wolf Spider Treat (3x Insect Wings, 1x Grasshopper, 2x Seed Oil, 1x Petal, 2x Spider Eye)

Uses – The Wolf Spider is a fierce mount that will attack enemies while you’re riding it. Although not exceptionally powerful, it’s suitable for dealing with weaker insects. However, it has lower health than a Gecko and struggles against larger groups of insects.

How – Chat with Lisandra to unlock a new quest where you must defeat the Albino Spider. Bring the quest item back to Lisandra, who’ll teach you how to craft the spider treat. Be cautious when approaching Lisandra since her cave is teeming with jumping spiders.

Grasshopper

Required Item – Grasshopper Treat (2x Seed Oil, 3x Insect Egg, 1x Petal)

Uses – The Grasshopper isn’t just the speediest insect, but it can also leap great distances. To travel the world quickly, obtain the Grasshopper as soon as possible.

How – To craft the Grasshopper treat, all you need is a Cauldron. After preparing the item, battle the Grasshopper, leaving it with half health to access the taming option.

Damselfly

Required Item – Damselfly Treat (1x Petal, 2x Seed Oil, 3x Firefly Juice)

Uses – The Damselfly functions as a flying mount, offering both speed and the ability to glide for short spans. However, using this ability drains stamina, so don’t overexert yourself.

How – Helping Nok unlocks a quest leading to the clover key. Defeat the King Stag Beetle, use the key to unlock the chest, and claim your reward. Then, talk to the Elder to obtain the Damselfly treat recipe and gather the necessary items to craft the treat.

Gecko

Required Item – Gecko Treat (2x Seed Oil, 1x Petal, 2x Bee Head, 2x Ant Head)

Uses – The Gecko boasts a larger health pool than other pets and can climb tall structures with you on its back.

How – Defeat the Rhino, collect its horn after taking Skadi’s mission, and give him the Rhino horn. He will then teach you the Gecko Treat recipe.

Tips for Acquiring Insect Mounts in Smalland

  • Remember to craft a whistle, enabling you to summon your pets to your location.

  • You can only have one active pet at a time. To switch pets, you must either release or kill your current active pet.

  • If you travel too far from your pet, it might glitch or be released if you’re away for an extended period.

  • In battle scenarios, the Wolf Spider and Gecko make better insect companions, as the other insects are weaker and less effective. Additionally, you’ll need to dismount the Gecko for it to fight on your behalf.

  • You can heal injured pets by tossing food on the ground.

  • When riding a Wolf Spider, Gecko, or Grasshopper, you’ll be immune to fall damage from high places.

  • Attempting to cross bodies of water while riding the Damselfly will result in instant death.
