When hunting animals, the more injured they are, the slower they get.
When hunting deer, 2 spear throws will slow it down to where you can run it down and spear poke it.
The first time you hit a deer with a spear, try to make sure it is full health or 2/3 health spear. The spear will stick in the deer, allowing you to track it easy as it runs off with inspection mode.
Boar will run after you throw a spear into it, allowing you to finish it off easily with a melee.
