Dinkum Fishing Guide: Fish Like a Pro

Dinkum is a new survival game/life simulator currently available in Steam Early Access. In it, you’ll explore an Australia-inspired Outback setting full of all kinds of wildlife and biomes unique to that part of the world. Like any other survival game, you’ll spend most of your time gathering and refining resources to craft and build your way to a thriving community from a little tent. When you aren’t doing that, you’ll be managing your survival needs, including keeping your energy up with food.

Besides food and resources, you’ll need quite a bit of money for all of the supplies and equipment you’re going to need to be the best Dinkum player you can be. There are a few ways to earn money, but arguably the best way is by grabbing a fishing rod and taking it to the water to catch some fish.

Fishing in Dinkum is pretty different from other games. The unique mechanic can take some getting used to and will require quite a bit of practice in order for you to get it down pat. If you’re enjoying Dinkum but need a helping hand as far as fishing goes, you can use this handy Dinkum Fishing Guide to become a master fisherman.

Get a Permit

Before you can start fishing, you’ll need the proper permit. To get it, you’ll need to complete milestones and collect the permit points, which can in turn be used to purchase the fishing permit.

Many of the features and abilities in Dinkum are locked behind permits, but the fishing permit is fairly cheap, so it shouldn’t be too long before you’re able to pick it up. Just take a look at the milestones menu in your notebook and pick up some of the easy ones to get those permit points fast.

Buy a Rod

With your permit in hand, you’re one step closer to your goal. Next, you’ll take a trip over to John the shopkeeper, and purchase a fishing rod from him, the most crucial piece of equipment for this activity. The rod will be fairly cheap, so you might just be able to pick it up right away. But if you don’t have the cash on hand, you can sell a few things and get it right away.

Find a Fish

Once you have your fishing rod, you can then make your way over to a river. In order to not waste your time, you should be looking for fish in the water. If you cast your line in an area without fish, you won’t catch anything.

Your First Catch

When you see a fish, you can cast your line. You’ll cast your line with the left mouse button. The longer you hold the button, the farther you will cast, and you can also reel in the line with the left mouse button after you’ve cast.

The goal is now to get the mouse to bite. Once your bobber has a fish’s attention, it will nibble for a bit, and then bite, which will show as your bobber submerging and a splash. With a fish on the line, you’re going to want to reel it in with the left mouse button when it isn’t splashing.

If it is splashing, you’ll know that the fish is fighting, and it is actually possible for your line to break and lose the fish if you try to reel in while it is fighting. After a few seconds, you’ll have reeled in your catch and you can practice more to become a pro fisherman!
