How to Protect & Shield the Ball in FIFA 22

L2 (PS4 & PS5) / LT (Xbox One & Series X I S) allows you to shield the ball when you have it, and therefore it’s usually utilized when attacking, but it can and should be used defensively well. If both players are fiercely contesting the ball, your player might take it and shield it if you press L2 (PS4 & PS5) / LT (Xbox One & Series X I S), which is particularly effective if your player is physically stronger than the opponent and less risky than a regular tackle. So, when you make a thorough pass, be sure to hold LT/L2 and the sprint button RT/R2 simultaneously when in front of the defense, and you will prevent the player from passing you and going in front.

Consider shielding as a counter to tackling, rather than something you can hold to fend off the defense. If the defender presses B / Circle to tackle, you can shield and counter the lunge by tapping. The defender will usually bounce off, allowing you the freedom to move the ball away from the pressure.

You can also engage a shielding opponent in FIFA 22 by pressing the following button combinations listed below;

  • PlayStation – L2 + Left Stick towards shielding direction

  • Xbox – LT + Left Stick towards shielding direction

As you can see, shielding the ball does not always work. People have the opportunity to steal the ball from your player. Pulling and holding a player’s shirt is an excellent way to apply pressure from behind. Similarly, engaging a shielding opponent works in the same way, except it will help you niggle a player shielding the ball instead. But avoid using it too aggressively, as one too many presses of the button can lead to a foul and potentially a card.
